First time in Dubai? Ten moments you shouldn't miss

Dubai rewards first-time visitors who plan a little. The city is big, the days are warm and the best experiences, like sunset views, desert evenings and waterfront dinners, work best when they're timed well. Here are the ten moments we make sure our travellers don't miss.

1. The view from At the Top

The Burj Khalifa's observation decks on levels 124 and 125 give you the whole city at once: the desert on one side, the Gulf on the other. Late afternoon is our favourite time. You see the city in daylight, then watch it light up.

2. The Dubai Fountain

Right below the tower, the fountain show plays in the evenings with music and light. Combine it with your Burj Khalifa visit and Dubai Mall for an easy, memorable evening.

3. Dinner on a dhow

A traditional wooden dhow cruise along Dubai Marina, with dinner and entertainment, is one of the most relaxing ways to see the skyline. Two hours on the water is just right after a long flight.

4. The desert at sunset

A premium desert safari is the moment most travellers talk about afterwards: dune drives, golden light, then a BBQ dinner and entertainment at a desert camp.

"Dubai is a city of icons, but it's the quiet desert evening that people remember."

5 & 6. Gold Souk & Dates Market

Old Dubai is a world away from the glass towers. Browse the Gold Souk's glittering windows and pick up dates and spices to bring home.

7. Miracle Garden

Millions of flowers shaped into arches, hearts and even an aeroplane. It's seasonal, so we build it into itineraries when it's open.

8. Global Village

An evening at Global Village is a trip around the world in one place, with pavilions from dozens of countries, street food, shows and shopping.

9 & 10. A slow morning and a city tour

Leave space for a leisure morning by the pool, and take a half-day city tour to see landmarks like the Burj Al Arab, the Palm and the Museum of the Future without the hassle of planning transport.

Our tip

  • Visit between November and March for the most comfortable weather.
  • Keep a light layer for air-conditioned malls and desert evenings.
  • Book Burj Khalifa time slots in advance, because sunset sells out first.

All of these moments are part of our Dubai Luxury Tour, with flights, visa, insurance and a 4★ hotel included.
